This is an article for you who are about to come out of the PC-closet, so if you still use a PC and thinking of switching, read on.

Two computers in one

Since Apple released the Boot Camp which let’s me install Windows XP on the Mac I do not even miss the gaming part. And the MacBook is great for gaming. I did have some problems with the installation of the drivers at first but some tweaking solved the problem.

When I need to use Windows XP but not in need for the graphics card for gaming such as online poker I use Paralells Desktop which is a virtualization application and let’s you run additional OS’es inside Mac OS X.

Less maintanance more work

By doing the switch I have minimized the time I spend on keeping my computers clean from malware, viruses and trojans. Pre-Mac I use to spend every morning updating my virus protection, read firewall logs and of course, sorting spam from my inbox. This would take me some half an hour, not counting spam sorting, this is valueble time since “time is money”. Now I just starts the computer and get to work rest assured that my computer is safe.

The screen, that wonderful screen

The screen (non-glossy) on the MacBook is just gorgeous, so gentle to the eyes compared to my IBM Thinkpad that was way too dark. I did not realize this before I got the MacBook but now when I start it up I can’t stand it. I have heard many complains about the heat and noise of the MacBook, sure it gets hot but I cat’t say it bothers me, the IBM did also get hot so it’s not that much a difference.

Programs and games

I thought I would miss some of the pc programs after the switch but that’s not the case. I’ve managed to find equivalent or even better programs for the Mac. This article shows some of the programs I recommend.

For you who are about to switch

Do not hesitate, I know the hardware is a little expensive but rest assured it’s worth every penny. As I said more work less tweaking and the up comming Mac OS X Leopard is it self a reason to switch.

Apple’s machines are really beautiful and the “lack” of viruses doesn’t make them any worse. And I really do think Apple makes the best computers out there. What would be your reason to switch?

Pissed off and tried of this I found an application called Parallels Desktop in which I can boot up Windows within Mac OS X. So why is Boot Camp obsolete you might ask. I mean that instead of shutting down OS X and then boot up Windows to do one small thing and then go trough a new boot sequense into OS X, you can boot up Windows and still keep working in OS X while Windows boots up then do your thing in Windows then shut it down without affecting OS X. Isn’t that a blast.

The only time a native Windows boot is required is if you want to play games. I have a PS2 fo that kind of stuff so…

I’m very happy with the computer and I can recommend buying one even though the price is a litle high. Rumors say that Apple will release a new iBook today, perhaps to a more moderate price.

To my delight the support guy gave me an reference number for the service and told me to go to my local Apple Approved Service Provider. Hmm, I live in a small town so I thought that the nearest is very far away but luckily I found one a couple of miles from my house. I went there and got a very nice first impression. A service guy takes a quick look at the macBook and says to an other guy standing next to us “I order the spare part and you get his (my) phone number” I didn’t have to show the reference number. They will order the part and call me when it arrives. The computer works and I¬† LOVE IT. It get a little hot though. More to come.

And some people are reporting that the MacBook gets so hot it is impossible keep it in your lap. Now the word “laptop” gets a new definition so from now on I guess we have to call it portable.

You aren’t allowed to use this guide to install OSX on your PC if you are not an Apple developer! This guide only shows you that it is possible and tells you something about partitioning! So: Buy an Apple from apple.com if you want to run osx!

Requirements

• To run Tiger on x86 you must have at least a SSE2 compatible processor.
• Mac OS X Tiger image file. (It is illegal to download this file from bitorrent by searching for “tiger-x86.tar.bz2″.)
• dd for windows.
• chain0
• You need an additional hard drive for this, a single partition will not do.

Installing

1. Uncompress the Tiger file.
2. Create a new partition of type “0xaf” on the empty hard drive.
3. In command prompt type make sure to hit enter between every line:
• DISKPART
• DISKPART> Select disk (DISK NUMBER)
• DISKPART> Delete partition
• DISKPART> create partition primary id=af
• DISKPART> Exit
4. Open command prompt and input this “dd if=(path)tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\.\PhysicalDriveX, where X is the number of you empty Hard disk. If you type the wrong number here it wipes your primary disk, so be careful. This takes from 15 min to several hours so be patient.
5. Copy chain0 to your root drive (C:\).
6. Add this line to boot.ini C:\chain0=”Mac OS X”
7. Reboot, you should now be able to dual boot XP and Tiger.
8. Tiger are now running very slow so using the Finder go to “/System/Library/Extensions/” and delete the file “AppleTPMACPI.kext” in this folder. You may need to authenticate with your password (bovinity) to delete it. Reboot and your computer will spring to life.

Please do not attempt this if you are unsure about your hard drive numbering and do not come here asking for help when your entire primary hard drive is wiped out. Happy Mac’ing.
